Inguqu I (Change)

Madoda Fani

South Africa
2017

Smoke-fired earthenware.

As has become distinctive of Madoda Fani’s work, lnguqu I embodies artisanal craftmanship that one cannot but marvel at. Its organic shape is reminiscent of a calabash, Ukhamba beer pot, or Umquba milk pail, and its meticulous decorative indentation mimics the textures of a woven basket or Ndebele indzila. These elements have been solidified through a traditional pit firing method to establish an unmistakably African, yet modern presence which demands attention.
