At a distance, Wim Botha’s work might resemble the typical bronze bust of a state head. Yet, a more accurate description might be a faceless, nameless figure being simultaneously mended, and still under construction. The ancient Japanese method of kintsugi is referenced, but here using the colloquial mieliepap, which has become iconic of Botha’s work. A “tomb of the forgotten politician,” comes to mind.
