The Butterfly Art Project: Empowering Communities Through Therapeutic Art

The Butterfly Art Project (BAP) trains and mentors a growing movement of Community Art Facilitators (CAFs) to deliver psycho-social support through art therapeutic classes to children in under-resourced communities across South Africa. These classes play a vital role in helping children develop healthy coping mechanisms, manage stress, and heal from trauma, fostering emotional resilience and mental well-being.

Art serves as a powerful medium for healing, self-expression, and lifelong creative growth — it is especially critical in communities where trauma is prevalent, and access to mental health resources is limited. In South Africa, many primary schools face multi-level crises, with reduced budgets leading to the exclusion of the arts from curriculums. The Butterfly Art Project addresses this gap by promoting creative development as an essential component of holistic child development.

BAP CAF Impact in 2023:

  • 374 active Community Art Facilitators

  • Operating in 142 communities

  • Reaching 20,228 children with therapeutic art classes

BAP is a proud partner of the ST2025 Education Programme, as they continue to champion the transformative power of art in education and community well-being.
