About
In June 2023, renowned visual activist Prof Sir Zanele Muholi launched an engaging dot-to-dot book called Connect the Dots, which serves as a powerful tool for communication and connection. The images used in this book are taken from Muholi's acclaimed photographic series, Somnyama Ngonyama, which has garnered worldwide recognition. Muholi's ultimate vision for this book is to encourage collectors and organisations to purchase copies on behalf of schools and educational institutions, contributing to the development of a new generation of aspiring artists, thinkers, and activists.

The workshop, taking place on the 19th of June at the Rupert Museum, is a collaborative effort hosted and curated by Anelisa Mangcu (Under The Aegis) and three local organisations who all share a key focus: art education. First, the Muholi Art Institute (MAI) serves as an incubation space for artists, filmmakers, photographers, and visual activists, offering a dedicated environment for creative expression and critical dialogue. Second, the Stellenbosch Outdoor Sculpture Trust (SOST) is deeply passionate about showcasing local contemporary art, promoting creativity among school learners, and inspiring them to pursue art as a subject. Finally, Art School Africa (ASA), a non-profit organisation, equips young, aspiring art practitioners with the necessary educational tools and networks to establish a professional practice in the arts. Together, these organisations and institutions aim to create a transformative and empowering experience for participants.
Mentorship
To enhance the learning experience, a mentorship program between high school learners and students from the Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography will be implemented. Each high school learner, or a group of learners, will be paired with a mentor from the academy for the day. These mentors serve as intermediaries, encouraging open dialogue between the artist and the young learners.
